Within the last fifteen years, a series of events on a global scale have made it essential to reconsider the paradigms that have survived in the field of housing. The approach that sees the house as an economic commodity – a tool of investment and wealth – has resulted in the financialization of housing with the increasing dominance of the financial markets in the housing sector, but with the experienced economic crises, especially the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, have revealed the negative effects of this approach on the society and the economy. The housing problem deepened in many countries of the world in the post-crisis period, has begun to be described as the ‘economic accessibility crisis to housing’. In the face of this crisis, the approach that emphasizes that housing is rather than a social good and sees housing as a human right has started to make itself felt again in current discussions. With the global epidemic conditions, we are in today, the necessity of all life to fit within the boundaries of the dwelling has brought the most basic function of the dwelling, which is the shelter function, and the approach advocating that this function is sufficient and affordable. Each paradigm changes housing policies and decision-making processes by highlighting a set of unique, interrelated concepts, issues, and principles. In this direction, it is seen that the main emphasis in political discussions and international strategy documents in the current period is on “access to adequate and affordable housing for everyone and sustainable housing environments”.

Due to the global pandemic housing became the center of life for all of us, new trends and problem areas have arisen in the housing markets. The main trends are the mobility from the central and relatively denser areas towards the periphery where the density of housing and people is less, the increasing demand for detached houses instead of multi-storey apartment buildings, the use of second houses used as summer-seasonal as the main house, housing in order to improve the services provided by the existing house can be listed as an increase in domestic investments. In addition to these trends, rising housing expenditures due to the increase in time spent at home, problems in paying rent and housing expenditures caused by unemployment and loss of income, housing and rental values that increased as a result of the slowdown in housing production and the narrowing of housing options were among the main problem areas. As a result of all these, it is observed that the social and spatial gap between the households whose housing expenditures increase while experiencing a loss of income and on the other hand, the households that are less dense, have more green and open spaces and have the opportunity to access safer housing environments thanks to their better economic conditions. In the immediate vicinity of the residence, the need for open and green spaces and public spaces that everyone can access for a healthy life is increasing. From this point of view, the 7th Urban Studies Congress aims to open the following topics for discussion in the context of housing in the world and Turkey, under the title of “Sustainable, Livable, Accessible Housing and Its Environments”:
