Retired from METU Faculty of Architecture, Department of City and Regional Planning, Prof.Dr. İlhan Tekeli resigned in 2011 when he was an Honorary Member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences. He graduated from ITU in 1960 as a Civil Engineer. He received his master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from METU in 1964 and his master’s degree in regional science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1966. He obtained his doctorate degree from ITU Faculty of Architecture in 1969. He is one of the founders of the Turkish History Foundation and was the chairman of the board of directors for the first ten years. In 1989, together with Selim İlkin, he received the Sedat Simavi Social Sciences Award. He was a member of YÖK between 2004-2008. He received the Mustafa Parlar Science Award in 1994. He was elected as a member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences in 1996. He was awarded the Mustafa Parlar Outstanding Achievement Award in Education in 1999 and the TÜBİTAK Service Award in 2006. He has about 100 published books, written in 2009 with Selim İlkin, Yiğit Gülöksüz, Erdoğan Soral, Tarık Okyay, Gencay Şaylan, Raşit Gökçeli and alone. His scientific articles were published in 25 volumes by the History Foundation. His historiography, which he wrote with Selim İlkin, has been collected by Bilgi University under the title of “Harri of the Republic”. His field of interest includes City Planning, Regional Planning, Social Systems, Macro Geography, Municipalism, Economic Policies, Turkish Economy and Urban History, Educational Planning and Scientific Philosophy, and Historiography.
